Faith. The dictionary definition is:

  1. Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
  2. Strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

…’based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof’…really? Is this possible? Is it not ridiculous to imagine that you could believe in something that 1/ you can’t see and 2/ you don’t necessarily have solid, hard evidence for?

HAVING faith in anything is not easy. It requires a great deal of trust and a wholehearted belief in that person, that they are not going to let us down if we give them our trust. Sadly people are not perfect, and do often let us down. That is partly why so many find it hard to put our faith in God, an entity that we can’t even see let alone be able to believe that they will not let us down.

Faith in God comes partly from experience. From either experiencing something inside of you, a feeling of assurance that God is really there, or through seeing God at work in someone else. Things that are not humanly possible I believe can only be explained through God, and by seeing such things before me I see it as proof enough for me to take that step of faith and believe. I have seen people healed through prayer, people who were blind have been given back their sight, and those deaf can now hear. You may doubt this, but the reality is that the Jesus Christians believe in today is the same Jesus who we can read about in the bible, He still does the same things, he just isn’t on physically earth any more.

People say that Christianity is for weak people and for people who need something to lean on, a ‘crutch’. I think the opposite is true. To believe in something that you cannot see requires such an element of faith that it is not easy to do, therefore it surely cannot make you weak?!

Some people ask why, if God is real, why doesn’t he show himself to us? That would surely be easier?… Well sure, it would be easier! But God has create us with free will, and free choice. He’s not going to force us into anything. Rather, He gives us the choice to believe in Him and follow Him if we want to… which is where faith comes into it.

What have you got to lose?

‘Look at me. I stand at the door. I knock. If you hear me call and open the door, I’ll come right in.’ Revelation 3 v 20

Faith is taking God’s promises and daring to believe them.
